Have you ever thought to yourself that you studied the wrong thing after school? Well, that’s not quite how it is with me; I think I studied the correct course for myself. Wait, no; correction: I studied one of the correct courses for myself. I enjoy what I do now, but I’m pretty sure that there is an infinite list of stuff out there that I’d enjoy just as much. And one of those things, on that infinite list, would be developing games.
I think that anybody that has some gaming experience, also has some experiencing in developing games, whether it be house ruling in the free parking rule for Monopoly, taking out the boring town pieces from Zombies, developing your own fantasy Magic: the Gathering cards, or even creating your own little nonsense childhood playground game about trying to cover your body and clothing in as many grassburns/stains possible.
Currently, on my CV as a game developer, my credentials are:
I have very many years of playing games and I have a liking to really, really want to make games for a living.
So how would I go about improving my CV through appropriate study? Well, these days there are courses you can go study post-school that actually focus on game development. It was by chance that I stumbled upon the blog for the students and staff of the Diploma of Gaming and Entertainment Technology at Temasek Polytechnic in Singapore. It’s a relatively new blog, but I do enjoy it. I will forever be an academic at heart and I appreciate the dynamic of academia and gaming as portrayed in the blog, be it about the latest industry news or the latest idea for the boardgame development project. Well worth the read, in my opinion.
