[WWDDGD 2] My Nekkid Paladin

This time around, it seems that WotC was able to produce an adventure that was actually a whole bunch of fun from the start (or maybe I was just lucky to have a great bunch of people to play with). This post will contain a few spoilers, so if you intend to play this adventure in the near future, avert your eyes.

My paladin, still clothed

My paladin, still clothed

I participated at Subcultures, Utrecht, with 5 other players. One of my fellow players happened to be a work colleague that was playing for the first time – hopefully, he is now a full convert to the hobby (I have pictures of him in LARP gear, so I can always blackmail him into joining future games). Three of the other the players were also new to the system (not the hobby) and given the drawn out nature of WotC combats, we didn’t get to play the adventure in it’s entirety. However, our creative store-GM was able to move things around so that we could still play the story out in full (YAY!).

Since my work buddy was new to the hobby, the group decided to let him play the relatively simple-to-play Goliath Barbarian, Ultha. So, I played as the Dwarven Paladin of Moradin, Eomer, in order to show off different styles, strategies and tactics in melee (and protect/heal him as necessary).

My game highlights included:

  • Tijn, the store owner, provided us with free coffee! Awesome!
  • I turned my Dynamic Craghammer into a Javelin to hit a fleeing drake. The Dynamic weapon property is fun!
  • I got my armour eaten by a rust monster.
  • As a group, realising why our characters came equipped with backup weapons (the Barbarian had two greatswords) and why the statistics of our unarmed attacks were listed.
  • Liberal use of shield bashing, kicking and one attempted elbow drop followed.
  • A discussion about the Rogue’s ‘Sly Flourish’ power:
    • Me: So you add your charisma to damage too? What do you do? Insult the guy after you stab him?
    • GM (voice 1): *Groaning in pain as if hit by dagger*
    • GM (voice 2): Yeah, that’s what she said!
    • GM (voice 1): *Intensify groaning*

  2. Our barbarian dynamized his greatsword into a longspear to attack past an ally.

I was the tiefling warlord. I was critically hit for 37 by one of the orcs in the first encounter. Oh, well. I had fun with the bravura build powers (even Brash Assault paid off a couple of times). He ended up dead, along with the dwarf, by the end, but the rest of the party wrapped up the adventure.

  3. Hi, Jatori!

Greetings from the Rogue! The hammer to javelin trick was indeed awesome, and now I actually know what you look like. (Insert evil laugh)
You guys were great, I was surprised that we turned out to have such a great party, and the 2 of you did team up nicely. Shame about the missed elbow drop.

Last time you were in the second group, so I was wondering which of them you were.
Did you ever finish the 1st gamed day game?

Hope to see you again sometime,

    may you ever roll 20’s!

    • Hey Graccus,

Now I have a face too!

Yes, we managed to finish off the first game day game. Good fun.

Still trying to decide if I’m going to play in the DDMiniatures release tournament on Saturday. Unfortunately, I won’t be around for DMG 2 day though.

  4. Sounds like you guys had fun. Not surprising, the title of your post here pretty much happened to the paladin in the group I ran. What was entertaining is that he ended up using armor from the orcs they killed earlier and ended up being efered to as a dworc.

    ah, childish humor….

    • In most of the reports I’ve read, the dwarf always lost his plate armour. My group also thought of looting the orcs for armour, but due to time constraints, our GM merged the 2nd and final encounters together, so I never got the chance to don my dworc armour. :P

  6. Well even though the barbarian seems to be the easiest character, i still managed to kill 2 enemies and bust up the boss at the end! AHA! I must also add that by busting up the boss I did in turn release the hellish dragon inside of her and ended up on my back… BUT NONETHELESS!!!! I had a big sword, that was cool… Regards, the noob
