Baldurs Gate

Baldur's Gate

Long long time ago, in land pretty far from where you sit now (depending on the land you are sitting in), there was… me.  I was an innocent boy, not knowing of the dangerous threat known as RPG’s. Then one day, I was given 8 CD’s worth of a computer game by a tall dark stranger known only as dagger>>. The mystical CD’s contained my first introduction into what became an obsession, a curse…a hobby.

Baldur’s Gate is a high fantasy D&D RPG set in the Forgotten Realms just after the Times of Trouble.   While the central story is gripping, it was the exploration of the entire Sword Coast and all its mini-quests that really caught my imagination.

I gathered some school buddies and we played the game together (Nothing is more fun than running away from your own party members because they were charmed by some sirens).  Then it all spiralled out of control with Pen and Paper D&D.  Before long I was DMing my own home-brewed sessions  and… well that’s a story for another time.

println(“foo”);

  1. Yes, well, the story for another time is where the power goes to foo’s head and suddenly his vict— I mean players face elite advanced greater dire wolfs at level 2-and-eleventeen (thats because they are actually level 3, but the GM doesn’t let them level).

    ;)

    Knux will be missed…

  3. You know, I always think I missed something about those games. They were completely forgettable for me and I never could bear to complete them. Good to hear how one more person got into the hobby.

    I also did it with D&D with a boxed set, on simplified 2ed Rules… I think it was 2nd Edition (it should have been, therefore, unplayable by definition.) By the way I never actually used the boxed set. Later I picked up a copy of Deadlands… used it once and then I remembered that I hate westerns. Later I played In Nomine, although a combination of playing the HORRIBLY MAIMED Spanish (as in coming from Spain) edition and having retarded GMs drove me away and…

    Wait… man, why the heck did I stick with this is beyond my understanding.

    Federico.

    • I heard about such classics as Fallout I & II and Planescape Torment too late. By the time I looked at these games they were so old they were almost not worth playing (I know, Heresy!).

      The freedom to run around and do your own thing was what I liked most about Baldur’s Gate. What main quest? All I remember is trekking through the country side and meetings basilisks and giants and ogres and sirens and things. And eventually defeating them after much running.
